STAND BY FOR JAZZ!
Your SEMass Jazz Newsletter for Feb., 2008
It should be an action-packed February for jazz lovers in southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Check it: The Black Eagle Jazz Band, Amanda Carr, the inimitable Jimmy Mazzy and of course our own DIXIE DIEHARDS Jazz Band in the mix kicking off the month with Mardi Gras and swinging all the way through President's Day!
We're expecting a great show with the Diehards and Maria Ventura 2 p.m. Feb. 10 at Blackstone River Theatre, 549 Broad St., Cumberland, with a family-styled celebration of New Orleans Jazz capping off Mardi Gras week. Tix are $12. Visit http://www.riverfolk.org/ or contact me, Rick Foster, at 508-226-2986.
During the past month we lost Bob Enos, trumpeter of Roomful of Blues, who had the rare ability to span jazz generations from Louis Armstrong to the present day. A rare talent with an even rarer ability to, in the words of friend and fellow musician Jack Radcliffe, both "strut" and "stretch." Bob will be missed.
Two notable local CD releases this month:
The Little Mahrud Jazz Orchestra, led by Plainville's Ernie Bariaolo, has issued a stunning little disc by the same name featuring the 10-piece pocket big band. You'll love their take on Diz's "A Night In Tunisia" and "Groovin' High." Contact ERnie at 508-695-0985 or by email at ebarisaxolo@yahoo.com.
Former North Attleboro singer-songwriter-guitarist Karl Sharicz is out with his new album entitled "Dancing Hearts" which comprises 12 attractive originals. The disc includes "My Shiny Day," co-written by Rick Foster of the Dixie Diehards Jazz Band. You'll find much of the content retro-pop oriented but studded with a lot of jazz-influenced solos and backing tracks by guitarist Steve Sadler and trumpeter Kris Lucander. Visit Karl at http://www.fatapplemusic.com/.
